RaceFail: Once More, with Misdirection
For the past three weeks or so, I've been forced to contemplate deleting or locking down this livejournal because of harassment and privacy threats I've been receiving as a somewhat bizarre result of RaceFail09.

What's been going on
[quick eta - Kathryn has apparently been redirecting the pages where she outed me to some kind of spammer site that may contain malware. So you probably don't want to click on those links.]

Kathryn Cramer has been linking my LJ to my full name on wikis and in other people's blog comments and has repeatedly stated that my participation in RaceFail debates was an attempt to smear the Nielsen Haydens in grudgewank, even though I was involved in that discussion long before the Nielsen Haydens joined in, as is proved in numerous places, such as the dated entries in our own livejournals and in the well-documented and widely linked timeline of posts. Will Shetterly has been posting speculations about my family, my class, my history, and my political and personal beliefs that he has presented as fact, as well as repeatedly misrepresenting what I've said about him, failing to provide context to or links to what I've said, and claiming that I have taken his words out of context and not allowed him to represent himself, even though I have included links to his original words and to his later defense. He has also posted speculation about [info]deepad (even after apologizing and retracting his first statement), [info]veejane, [info]ithiliana, [info]vom_marlowe, and [info]icecreamempress. He posted my full name and LJ on his blog, even though I deliberately do not list my last name on my LJ.

Will did take down my last name at my request, and Kathryn has not so far posted my name on her blog. [eta: So much for that.] Unfortunately, I am not confident this will last, given that both Will and Kathryn have continued to discuss me on Will's blog, to assert that the only motivation I can have for privacy is malice, and to argue that making some information available (such as my first name) means that I have no right to expect other identification (such as my last name) not be exposed.

I've been active online for a long time, and I've taken some precautions about my identity, both on- and offline. I haven't tried to prevent online friends from learning my real name, or to prevent people who know me from one forum from realizing they're talking to the same person in another, but I have tried to prevent people who do not know me well offline from easily finding my online identity. I am happy to explain that these are my boundaries to people who misunderstand them, which happens on occasion.*

However, I do not owe anyone an explanation why these are my boundaries. I do not owe anyone an account of my biography, my resume, or my bank balance simply because I have argued with them on the Internet. If there is a problem with my arguments, people are welcome to address my arguments.

Why I'm posting
I have been hesitant to post because this is all such an outrageous derailment of the original conversation about race and racism in science fiction. But this ridiculous and painful detour actually brings us right back to the place RaceFail started out from: sf fandom is so insular, so white-focused, and so white-dominated that some of the people involved can ignore the literally dozens of people involved in an argument about race, the literally hundreds of posts made, out of a conviction that race is not the issue when people of color say it is, or out of the conviction that there are no people of color who argue about sf fandom online because people of color generally do not attend sf conventions. There is a reason people of color do not feel comfortable at sf conventions. This refusal to acknowledge that race can even be a real issue: this contributes to the institution of racism and the continuing whiteness of science fiction. This conviction, in the face of public conversation and well-documented timelines, that a discussion about race in science fiction is about the personal grudges of white people -- this inability to recognize, hear, or speak to the people of color involved in the discussion -- this in itself contributes to the institution of racism and the continuing whiteness of science fiction.

What I want

  1. If you know my full name, please don't link it to this LJ. Calling me Mely or Micole -- both of which I have had in my user profile -- is fine.
  2. Please do NOT comment at Will or Kathryn's blogs or attempt to engage with them directly.
  3. If you'd like to express sympathy or agreement, I would much prefer to re-focus attention back on the real issues. The POC-owned and -focused press [info]verb_noire should soon be starting up and taking submissions and contributions. The Carl Brandon Society is always open for donations and new members. There's a proposed panel for Wiscon that I love:

    Genuinely Multicultural
What would it take to change our community from a primarily English-speaking, English-writing community to a genuinely multicultural one? What might that change look like, and what might it bring us?

Post on that, here or in your own space. Or, if you can't think of anything (I am looking forward to being in the audience myself) or you are just too fucking tired of dealing with the SRS BZNSS of RaceFail (I am totally with you), but you want to do me a favor, post on the most recent book you read written by a POC, or your favorite book written by a POC, or give me recommendations for sf/f, romance, or historical fiction written by POC. Fluffy allowed and in fact enjoyed. Historical fiction set in Africa or pre-Columbian Americas especially appreciated.

* Reasons people may prefer pseudonyms or limited personal disclosure on the Internet:

  • Because it is a standard identity- and privacy-protection precaution
  • Because they have experienced online or offline stalking, harassment, or political or domestic violence
  • Because they wish to discuss sexual abuse, sexuality, domestic abuse, assault, politics, health, or mental illness, and do not wish some subset of family, friends, strangers, aquaintances, employers, or potential employers to know about it
  • Because they wish to keep their private lives, activities, and tastes separate from their professional lives, employers, or potential employers
  • Because they fear threats to their employment or the custody of their children
  • Because it's the custom among their Internet cohort
  • Because it's no one else's business

Would you prefer it if I did or didn't link to this? (Another option would be to add to the giant link post, but not put it in a new linkspam post.)

It's relevant to the Fail, and I'd like to spread your call to re-focus on the real issues. OTOH, I don't want to exacerbate the derailment or fuel any more attacks on you.

(And I know you've said you don't want sympathy or agreement, but: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH.)

No, link it. I posted because currently my privacy is hosed -- the Google search finds exactly what I didn't want it to find. So keeping silent was ... protecting Will and Kathryn from other people finding out about their behavior, but was not protecting me. I may delete, I may lock down, I may put my full name on this so that searches find the LJ instead of people calling me a hypocrite, a classist, a liar, and an all-around mean girl. I haven't decided yet.

[info]vom_marlowe also has a recent post on this, although I don't know if she wants it linked.

(Also, thanks.)

I think the best part is the one person whose arguments get called bullshit when she actually cites a source in her comment.

This is-- epically spectacular in a way that I cannot even begin to textually render.

Do you know offhand whether the CBS is continuing to sponsor the Octavia Butler scholarship? I've donated to them in the past and had considered doing so again when this discussion first started, but the website's a couple of years out of date.

So, some people respond to racefail by creating a new press, creating new festivals and writing new work. There's been a lot of traffic on 50books, a lot of great reviews of interesting books by POC.

Other people respond by attacking a person whose reputation their petty and vindictive actions can be assured of harming?

A book-by-a-POC that I really like and which has floated to the front of my brain because of the author's intelligent comments re' the ongoing RACEFAIL of the Avatar: the Last Airbender casting:

Same Difference and Other Stories, Derek Kirk Kim

I have been hesitant to post because this is all such an outrageous derailment of the original conversation about race and racism in science fiction.

No, its all about the racism in scifi-- people of color and their concerns are so unimportant in this discussion that it can end up being all about these two people's drama about class, or anonymity.

This is why I participate in and maintain POC safe spaces online.

I'm sorry you are getting all this shit because you stood up as an ally. But I guess it goes to show the lengths that white folks are willing to go to discipline other white people for speaking plainly about racism.

I keep starting comments about being disheartened, frustrated and ashamed in equal measure about {insert description of the Other Side Of This Discussion that doesn't use divisive language here, because I can't come up with one} and having to delete and start over because there's just too much. And also because "Asdkfjsdhfkljhiubc;isubctyv;ijbhs;iubibuyuv;ihbjkhbiub" lacks a certain eloquence.

Instead I'll say, please keep talking about this. Somewhere, even if it's not here. Everything you say - and everything Zvi says, and everything [info]delux_vivens says, and everything Willow says - makes me listen more.

I've seen some petty vengeful horrific stuff inside fandom, but... I don't think I ever expected this fucking toxic righteousness re: RL names from the major-failboat people. It really takes a low, petty soul to cling to that stupid RealName-or-Malice argument in the face of, you know, actual good reasons. I.. don't really have words. I do wish Kathryn Cramer to someday have employment issues stemming from the continued use of her real name attached to the unethical outings she's so fond of.

LJ ate my comment.

I think what's happening to you is why SF & F circles appear to be mostly white. Many people like me do not have the courage to interact with white supremacy on this level. The kind of harassment that you and other white/white-ish people are being put through because you're acting in a way that card-carrying terrorists would see as grounds for naming you a race-traitor exemplify why discussions of race and racism are costly to the people who talk and act against racism and its roots, rootlets, tendrils, and threads.

Again, like me have been made invisible, and the focus is placed on white people that are described as having no ackrite. You were the person who invited me to lj. You sent me an invite code. That account was deleted, my lj name changed, in part because of what happened to me when race was discussed in SGA fandom.

If it wasn't for safe spaces and poc-only spaces on lj, I would not discuss race and ethnicity in the blogosphere. If I go to a con, I go because I know there'll be someone of color to have my back.

I think fandom is already multicultural. It always has been. But then, so is America, so is Canada, so is just about anywhere Europeans settled. But, marginalizing people like (as far as white supremacy is concerned) is an enduring and persistent cultural value.

I'm glad for [info]verb_noire and I look forward to chromatic realities press. I think what it takes is more white people mounting consistent and persuasive critiques of the tactics of the likes of Shetterly and Cramer.

I look at the Harlem Renaissance, I look at the many times and places poc have been convenient and cool, but mostly in terms of how white people choose to interact each other, with chromatic identities being symbolic of white people valuing (and devaluing) of each other. There have been people of color living their own lives, and white allies supporting that from before America was a country. And yet, white people (as a whole) still won't learn/don't learn.

I think that what white people can do, is work on each other, and that poc have to continue to build up our connections with ourselves and one another. White allies should promote and support poc-owned and focused efforts, like you're doing here.

On a happier note, Joseph Marshall has got an unfinished post-apocalyptic novel about an older adult Lakota hunter heading to Alaska on horseback some two-hundred years in the future, after a great technological and ecological cataclysm at his official site.

I am very, very sorry this is happening to you. What they are doing is unconscionable, and yes, it is absolutely an attempt to silence you for daring to speak out about racism. It is completely your decision what you wish to do with this journal, but even as a mostly-silent observer, I have learned a lot from it, and thank you.

(Holy WTF??? Seriously, what the hell?)

I just finished [The Beautiful Struggle] by Ta-Nehisi Coates, which I have mixed feelings about. More than anything, it's about Coates' father, and yet I don't feel like I know him at all for reading about his life. The distance between reader and writer may reflect the distance between the inner lives of father and son - love and respect don't require full disclosure on anyone's part. Still, this is a book crammed with personalities, with lives long and short, and yet few - if any- really flower on the page. Even Coates seems a mystery to himself as he describes his past. Perhaps that's his tendency toward checking out, toward dreaming, given prose form? Or, equally, perhaps it's just me.

The book's very much about fathers, sons, brothers, friends - it's about manhood, and masculinity, and carving meaning and identity for yourself in a world that will rip it from you as fast as it can. And while I understand the need, the drive for the space and ritual of manhood that acts as this book's center stage, I missed the women. More than missed them, I wondered who they were, and how their lives looked, living and growing up and trying to survive - even flourish - in West Baltimore.

Today's plan - to pick up [Mean Spirit] by Linda Hogan (Chicksaw), again. It's been years since I read it last, and I'm craving fiction.

LINDA HOGAN!

I love her stuff. She's a beautiful writer, her descriptions are amazingly vivid and I fall in love with at least one of her characters in every book.

I came across this apposite quotation in the book I am reading, Agnotology: The Making and Unmaking of Ignorance (which is generally rather pertinent):
Privacy often has been construed as control over access by others to information, mainly about the self. As Warren and Laslett* point out, privacy involves a consensual and essentially cooperative ignorance arrangement, whereas secrecy is unilaterally imposed.

*In a 1977 article 'Privacy and Secrecy: A Conceptual Comparison', in Journal of Social Issues, so hardly trendy post-modernist quibbling.

I get so very very tired of people who cannot register that significant distinction between privacy and secrecy.

Have you read Amitav Ghosh, The Calcutta Chromosome? I'm not sure I was entirely happy with the ending, but what feminist historian of medicine cannot love a book in which a dim Robert Ross is led to the mosquito theory of transmission of malaria by the (aged, female) sweeper in his Indian laboratory?

Oh PLS, Oursin did the very same thing- posture around her weighty white woman moral superiority, and RL drag a small blog of non-white friends, for discussing one of her posts. Outed it, mocked it, linked it, and dragged all her white fantasy friends to go and rape it.

And she has the GALL to come pretending sympathy here? HA

OMFGWTF. I'm so sorry.

I don't have time to read much fiction at the moment :(, but the last academic book that blew my mind (still in the process of blowing, haven't finished it yet) was by a POC: Maria Josefina Saldana-Portillo's The Revolutionary Imagination in the Americas and the Age of Development. I've so far only read the first chapter but it taught me a lot of things I didn't know about when and how we came to have 'the developed world' and 'the developing world,' how the links to colonialism and gender and capitalism work in a really complex way. I didn't know how shallow my own critical analysis of that stuff was before!

I've always thought that a lot of the narratives of development that circulate around the ways sf thinks about the future have a lot to do with how white its mainstream worldview is. One of the things Saldana-Portillo argues is that the developmental imagination is NOT white/western-only, though, so I don't know.

How very upper class and thereby utterly dismissable I must be to be capable of such intellectualism. *spits the fire of the started-out-poor, ended-up-overeducated*

I would say I can't actually believe this ... but I can actually believe this, completely. I'm very, very sorry.

I don't know if you've read through Transcriptase-- you probably have! -- but the Brides of Heaven is concentrated awesome wrapped up in a further package of awesome. Book-wise, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Half of a Yellow Sun just ravaged me. It's not fluffy but it's very, very good.

Oh, for the love of God. Why do people suck so much?

I haven't said much on this, because I didn't know how to wrap my brain around the whole thing well enough to say something useful, but I've been reading and listening. Thank you for being courageous and smart and sane throughout this whole imbroglio.
